Registering With a Family Doctor

To find a family doctor accepting new patients, you can register on the waiting list:

If you need to see a doctor immediately, consult the Medical Consultations without Appointment page.

Once you have registered on the waiting list, your request will be evaluated and priority granted according to your health. It is impossible to determine exactly how long you will be on the waiting list. The waiting time may vary depending on the availability of doctors in your area and the number of people registered on the list in your territory.

If you were registered on the territory waiting list, you do not need to register again on the GAMF. Your registration has already been transferred to it and you keep your waiting priority. However, you must update your contact information so that you are easily reachable once you have been assigned a doctor.

Eligibility Criteria

To be able to register on the waiting list to find a family doctor (GAMF) you must meet the following eligibility criteria:

  • You must have a valid medical insurance card.
  • You must not be already registered with a family doctor. However, if your doctor can no longer see you or if you wish to change physicians, see Registering with a Family Doctor section.
  • You must live at the address indicated in your file at the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). If you do not live at that address, you can make a change of address This link opens a new window..
  • You must be over 14 years of age. If you are younger than 14, someone else older than 14 must register on your behalf.
  • You must live in Québec and your postal code must be listed by Canada Post.
  • Doctors in the regions of Nunavik or Cree Territory of James Bay cannot register patients. If you live in these regions, you must contact your health centre:
    • Nunavik: 819 964-2905
    • Cree Territory of James Bay: 819 855-2744

Updating a GAMF or Territory Waiting List Registration

If you must update your registration or change your contact information, you can make the changes directly on the waiting list to find a family doctor (GAMF).

Your registration will be updated and you will keep your waiting priority.

You may also request, directly on the GAMF, an evaluation of your health condition by a nurse, if this service is offered by your GACO. The nurse will revaluate your health condition and update the priority attributed to your registration.

You can also update your registration by telephone by contacting your territory waiting list.

Finding a Family Doctor Yourself

You may also find a family doctor on your own. Contact medical clinics or family medicine groups (GMFs) located near you to see if they are accepting new patients. You can find their contact info in the Finding a Resource section.

Registering with a Family Doctor

Once you have found a family doctor or have been assigned one, you must register with him or her. You must complete the registration form that will be given to you when you meet the doctor. Registration with a doctor is voluntary and free. However, it can be cancelled in certain cases:

  • If you register with another doctor.
  • If your doctor can no longer follow you – if, for instance, he or she leaves his or her place of practice or retires. To request another doctor, contact your territory waiting list. You will keep your current family doctor while waiting for a new one.
  • If you have a good reason to want to change your family doctor – if, for instance, you move and can no longer get to your current clinic. Contact your territory waiting list in order to request another doctor. You will keep your current family doctor while waiting for a new one.

In other situations, you may not be able to request a new doctor while still keeping your current one.

You must cancel your registration with your current doctor. By cancelling your registration, you could lose access to services offered by the clinic you normally go to. To cancel your registration with your current doctor, contact the RAMQ This link opens a new window.. You may then register on the waiting list through the GAMF or by telephone by contacting your territory waiting list.
